Nossa Senhora da Penha de França (Our Lady of Peñafrancia), is a chapel built into the rock itself in 1685. It was also an ancient refuge for canarian slaves, known as brave men, who escaped the violence of the neighboring estates. It is also a meeting and transit place for the residents of Faial, a village located on the northern coast of the Atlantic archipelago of Madeira (Portugal). The crypt is in a haunting forest area, where time stands still, with abandoned farms, banana trees, annona, moss, and desolate paths. Nature invades the material, leading to a poetic crossroads between memory, death, and history.
